ABC Football Club is a soccer-style, penalty shoot-out game designed to teach the most basic aspects of learning to read and spell - recognizing letters and recalling their associated sounds.
ABC F.C. assists in learning these skills by placing three letters (randomly or in alphabetical order) in a 3D virtual soccer/football goal-mouth. The player hears a letter of the alphabet (named or sounded) and they must tap the corresponding letter in the goal-mouth.
ABC F.C. was designed for a student who had been unable to learn the English alphabet for two years, despite the best efforts of their teacher. The student's interest in soccer/football was taken into account when designing a remedial game. After six half-hour sessions playing ABC F.C. over the course of two weeks the student was able to recall all the letters of the alphabet, and was able to sound out and spell all the words their teacher tested them on.
In this regard, ABC F.C. fulfilled its goal spectacularly. It is an extremely effective method of teaching the alphabet. It is designed with simple, clean graphics, to keep the focus squarely on the letters displayed. It uses minimal interface elements and minimal text for the benefit of young learners and those unfamiliar with English. The app tracks and displays correct and incorrect answers between game sessions for each letter, so parents and educators can track which letters the learner is having difficulty with.
